If recent history is any indicator, Alabama Crimson Tide players should expect to be lugging around some pretty sizeable championship rings following their defeat of the Clemson Tigers in the college football national title game on Monday night. The New York Times chronicles the design evolution of the college football championship rings, which reveals a resounding trend: They just keep getting bigger. So much so that former Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy rarely takes his 2009 title ring out of his dresser drawer because “it’s uncomfortable” to wear. And really, who could blame him for not wearing a ring that has grown “almost comically large,” as the Times puts it.
