Uncovered in Sri Lanka, the World’s Largest Blue Star Sapphire

It could fetch almost double its value at auction, the owner says.

A blue star sapphire recently discovered in a Sri Lanka mine is the world’s largest, according to gemologists in the country who spoke with BBC. The report says that the gem weighs 1404.49 carats and is estimated to be worth at least $100 million, though it could – according to its owner – sell for $175 million. Appropriately enough, the mine in which the sapphire was found is located in the city of Ratnapura, otherwise known as the “City of Gems.”
